海洋碳移除起飛

在完成關鍵資金募集與策略夥伴布局後，海洋碳移除新創 Vycarb 正準備於 2026 年邁入商業化擴張階段。成立於 2022 年的 Vycarb，過去一年在美國紐約東河（East River）進行碳移除試點計畫，並計畫於今年將技術從示範規模推進至實際商業應用。

Following a year of expanded partnerships and fresh funding, ocean carbon removal startup Vycarb is positioning itself for commercial scale-up in 2026. Founded in 2022, the company has been piloting its technology in New York City’s East River and now plans to transition from demonstration projects to commercial deployments.

According to CEO Garrett Boudinot, Vycarb’s priority for 2026 is to scale its low-cost, fully measurable carbon capture and storage technology by expanding its international project pipeline and accelerating commercialization.

Strategic Partnerships Strengthen Verification and Deployment

To support this transition, Vycarb has partnered with industrial CO₂ management firm Tomco Systems and expanded its collaboration with ocean climate monitoring company atdepth. These partnerships enable Vycarb to enhance testing, monitoring, and third-party verification of its ocean-based carbon removal approach.

Vycarb 原本的技術重點在於移除水體中已溶解的二氧化碳，而與 Tomco 的合作，則讓公司能以工業排放的二氧化碳氣體作為原料，轉化為可長期儲存在水中的碳酸氫鹽（bicarbonate）。這代表該技術不僅適用於高 CO₂ 水域，也能直接處理來自工業點源的排放。

While Vycarb’s initial solution focused on removing dissolved CO₂ already present in water, the partnership with Tomco allows the company to use industrial CO₂ gas as an input, converting it into bicarbonate that can be permanently stored in water. This broadens the technology’s applicability beyond high-CO₂ water bodies to include industrial point-source emissions.

突破高純度 CO₂ 限制，切入難減排產業

相較多數碳捕捉與封存（CCS）與碳移除技術高度依賴高純度二氧化碳，Vycarb 的系統可處理不同純度、甚至低純度的 CO₂。這一特性，使其在鋼鐵、水泥、能源等難以減排產業中具備差異化優勢，也降低了對管線運輸或地質封存的依賴。

Boudinot 指出，這種彈性使 Vycarb 的技術有潛力成為工業排放的永久性碳儲存解方，而非僅限於特定場景的補充型技術。

第三方監測建立環境安全信心

Differentiation in Hard-to-Abate Sectors

Unlike many carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon removal technologies that require high-purity CO₂, Vycarb’s system can process a wide range of CO₂ purities, including low-purity industrial emissions. This capability differentiates Vycarb from other decarbonization solutions and reduces reliance on pipelines or geologic storage, making it particularly attractive for hard-to-abate industries.

Boudinot emphasized that this flexibility positions Vycarb as a potential permanent carbon storage solution for industrial emitters rather than a niche or supplementary technology.

Independent Monitoring Builds Environmental Confidence

At the East River pilot site, atdepth is responsible for independent monitoring of environmental impacts and removal efficacy. After more than a year of operation, monitoring results have shown no detectable negative ecological effects, with de-acidified water mixing effectively with surrounding river water.

For atdepth, the pilot also serves as a platform to refine scalable monitoring strategies. By combining in-situ ocean observations with modeling, the company aims to track long-term dispersion and impacts of carbon-removed water as projects scale.

Funding and Global Expansion

Vycarb 於 2025 年 10 月完成 500 萬美元募資，由氣候科技投資機構 Twynam 領投，投資方包括創投基金、永續水產投資公司 Hatch Blue、新加坡政府，以及能源巨頭 Shell（此前未對外揭露）。

In October 2025, Vycarb closed a $5 million funding round led by climate tech investor Twynam, with participation from venture capital firms, sustainable aquaculture investor Hatch Blue, the Singapore government, and energy major Shell, which had not previously been disclosed.

該筆資金將用於擴編團隊、優化系統設計，並推動技術整合至高排放且鄰近水體的工業場址。Vycarb 表示，其當前優先合作對象，是面臨迫切減碳壓力、或需要長期碳儲存解方的產業。

The company is using the capital to expand its team, advance system development, and integrate its technology at industrial sites with high CO₂ emissions located near water. Vycarb is prioritizing partners in sectors facing urgent decarbonization and long-term carbon storage needs.

目前，Vycarb 已在美國、歐洲與亞太地區建立潛在專案與合作管線，預計未來一年陸續對外公布。公司亦坦言，因美國政策環境對氣候激勵措施趨於保守，國際市場與跨境合作正成為降低政策不確定性的關鍵支點。

With a growing pipeline of projects across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, Vycarb expects to announce new partnerships over the coming year. The company also noted that increased policy uncertainty in the U.S. has reinforced the strategic importance of international markets, where decarbonization mechanisms remain active and supportive.
