The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) recently announced an in-depth cooperation with Microsoft to promote the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a global scale and significantly improve the efficiency and environmental benefits of food redistribution through the use of Microsoft Sustainability Manager. This collaboration not only simplifies the data management process, but also supports GFN’s commitment to four key goals: Zero Hunger, Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Decent Work and Economic Growth, injecting new vitality into global communities.

GFN coordinates and operates 778 food banks in 54 countries, which recycle and distribute millions of tons of food every year. As the world's leading food aid organization, GFN faces huge data management needs. Traditional manual data collection and reporting methods are time-consuming and resource-intensive, limiting the scale of organizations.

By automating data collection and analysis, the platform enables GFN’s food banks to quickly quantify their environmental impact while allocating resources more efficiently. “Our food banks often have to make difficult decisions with limited resources, such as hiring more social workers, purchasing transportation vehicles, or conducting data collection,” said Ana Catalina Suárez Peña, GFN’s senior director of strategic innovation. "This platform helps us achieve the best balance with limited resources, allowing us to focus more on improving the quality of community services."

Successful pilot projects: Ecuador’s path to change

As part of the pilot, GFN selected the Banco de Alimentos Quito food bank in Quito, Ecuador, which serves 95 community organizations and reaches 85,000 to 90,000 people each month. With the help of Microsoft solutions, the Quito Food Bank can not only accurately track food distribution data, but also regularly monitor and optimize operations. "For example, through data analysis, we discovered inefficiencies in the refrigeration system, and subsequently made improvements, significantly reducing carbon emissions," said Alicia Guevara, head of the Quito pilot.

This data-driven model shows great potential, allowing food banks to more flexibly adjust their operational strategies and further improve the efficiency of food redistribution. It also sets a benchmark for food banks in other areas.

Promote global cooperation on sustainable development

GFN's cooperation this time is not limited to Microsoft. It also cooperates with World Wide Technology to customize the development of the Microsoft platform to improve the accuracy of methane emission reduction data reporting. In Ecuador, based on data provided by GFN, the local government has integrated food bank operations into the national methane emission reduction plan, which shows the importance of data-driven decision-making for policy development. "What we provide is not only a way to solve the problem of hunger, but also a comprehensive strategy that takes into account environmentally sustainable development," Suárez Peña emphasized.

Achieve incredible impact: the power of data

In 2023, GFN's global network recycled 654 million kilograms of food, successfully preventing the emission of 1.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. These achievements not only reflect its outstanding contribution to climate action, but also demonstrate the value of applying innovative technologies in the food distribution process.
