Fossil fuel challenges and renewable energy opportunities
Despite record capacity of renewable energy installations, fossil fuels are still the primary source of energy today. In 2023, coal combustion will still be the most important source of electricity in the world and in G7 countries. According to the COP28 agreement, global renewable energy installation capacity needs to reach 11,000 GW by 2030, and energy efficiency needs to improve by more than 4% annually. This requires countries to accelerate the phase-out of coal and increase investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Action / Solution / Implementation
Advances in technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and smart grids, bring new opportunities for energy management. AI can optimize grid management and traffic data analysis to improve energy efficiency. However, AI itself consumes a lot of power, and the IEA predicts that the power consumption of data centers, AI, and cryptocurrencies will double by 2026. This means that while promoting technological innovation, countries also need to increase investment in renewable energy to avoid worsening energy problems caused by the application of new technologies.

Industry & Institutional Implications
In the future, global economic growth and population growth will put tremendous pressure on energy demand, especially in emerging economies. To achieve sustainable development, these countries need to support their growth with low-cost, low-carbon energy. The report points out that if energy efficiency can be comprehensively improved and renewable energy promoted, the world is expected to reduce energy intensity by 31% in 2030, saving approximately US$2 trillion in costs.

SNN Editorial / Pre-Disclosure Evidence Infrastructure Perspective
Conclusion
Future Outlook
Facing the challenge of climate change, the world must accelerate carbon reduction actions, especially in phasing out fossil fuels and expanding renewable energy. Businesses and governments need to work together to promote technological innovation and energy efficiency, and incorporate climate risks into operating strategies to cope with future challenges and move towards a sustainable future.
