The fight against climate change is at a critical juncture, with years of progress now being rapidly dismantled. Global efforts to address the climate crisis have stalled amid division and inaction. In response, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has issued a statement urging collective action to develop a new strategy that addresses today’s complex challenges and prevents climate action from failing once again.

CISL emphasized that this is not the first time global climate action has faced a crisis. The 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit failed to produce an agreement, and the global financial crisis led governments and businesses to cut back on environmental investments, throwing climate efforts into disarray. However, over the following five years, the climate movement found new direction, strengthened business collaboration, and adapted to political realities - culminating in the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement.

Current Crisis: Climate Action Stalls Under Multiple Pressures

The current global landscape presents numerous obstacles to climate action. Economic and security concerns have restricted investments in sustainable development, while dependence on fossil fuels has intensified. The rise of populism and nationalism has further weakened the political foundation for climate policies. Many governments are rolling back green policies, businesses and investors are abandoning climate commitments, and sustainability leaders are being dismissed.

CISL pointed out, “At its core, the existing system is unsustainable. Global instability is worsening, and leaders appear ill-equipped to address the crisis. As a result, more people are turning to authoritarian and populist solutions.”

However, CISL also emphasized that public demand for climate action remains strong. Research from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and others shows that a majority of people worldwide want stronger government and corporate action on climate change. Yet, without clear pathways and direct communication about the realities of action, this demand has not translated into meaningful change.

Four Key Strategies for Driving Change and Shaping the Future

In response to these challenges, CISL outlined four core strategies:
