As climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and economic instability drive a growing number of refugees and displaced populations worldwide, Nigerian startup AllSpace has proposed an innovative and culturally rooted solution: modular shelters made from recycled materials that can be rapidly assembled. The design not only demonstrates a commitment to sustainable architecture but also emphasizes the importance of dignity and quality of life for vulnerable communities.

Rebuilding the Concept of “Home” with Recycled Materials: Assembles in 4 Hours, Lasts for 2 Years

AllSpace’s modular shelter is inspired by traditional Nigerian architecture. Featuring a hexagonal structure and natural ventilation through integrated windows, it aims to feel “like home” to its residents. The materials are all readily available and sustainable - aluminum, waterproof canvas, 3D-printed plastic, and natural straw - offering insulation while minimizing carbon footprint.

整座庇護所可於四小時內快速組裝完成，成本僅約 120 美元（約新台幣 3,900 元），可持續使用兩年，適合用於災後臨時收容、長期難民營重建、或偏遠地區的社區住宅空間。設計同時納入太陽能供電功能，提升能源自主性，亦可靈活排列成社區聚落或家庭單元，營造出更具人性與凝聚力的生活空間。

The entire shelter can be assembled in just four hours at a cost of only $120 (approximately NT$3,900) and is designed to last for two years. It can be used for post-disaster emergency housing, long-term refugee camp infrastructure, or even rural community dwellings. Equipped with solar power for energy independence, the shelters can be flexibly arranged into family units or community clusters, creating more humane and cohesive living environments.

“Our shelter design respects both culture and climate resilience,” said Eromsele. “People are more willing to embrace a space that not only provides protection but also offers the warmth of a home.”
