碳移除新策略：Boomitra用生質封存開創南非氣候解方

獲得「地球衛士獎」（Earthshot Prize）肯定的碳移除公司 Boomitra，近日宣布在博茨瓦納啟動其首個「生質碳移除與封存」（Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage, BiCRS）項目，正式跨出其土壤碳領域，邁向另一條創新的氣候解方。

Carbon removal company Boomitra, recognized with the prestigious Earthshot Prize, recently announced the launch of its first Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) project in Botswana, marking a significant expansion beyond its established soil carbon initiatives into another innovative climate solution.

從土地劣化危機轉化為氣候契機

博茨瓦納長期受到「灌木入侵」（Bush encroachment）問題困擾：過度繁殖的灌木植物掠奪原生草地，不僅壓縮牧草生長空間，影響牲畜生產力，也提高野火風險，對當地生態與畜牧經濟造成雙重壓力。

Botswana has long struggled with the issue of bush encroachment - an overgrowth of invasive shrubs that displaces native grasslands, reducing forage availability for livestock and increasing wildfire risks. This ecological challenge places considerable pressure on both the local environment and pastoral economies.

Boomitra 推出的 Oasis 計畫，正是針對這一生態難題提出雙贏方案。該公司將入侵性灌木清除後壓製成高密度生質包，並在無氧條件下深埋於地下，可穩定封存碳超過百年，同時恢復草地生態、改善土壤生產力，創造農牧社區就業機會。

「這對我們而言，是自然的下一步。」Boomitra 創辦人暨執行長 Aadith Moorthy 表示，「我們已在十多個國家累積推動土壤碳項目的經驗，如今將這些營運與監測能力擴展到另一條具高完整性的新路徑。」

Boomitra’s Oasis project offers a dual-benefit approach to this problem. The company harvests the invasive shrubs, compresses them into high-density biomass packs, and buries them deep underground under anaerobic conditions. This process securely stores carbon for over a century while simultaneously restoring grassland ecosystems, improving soil productivity, and creating employment opportunities for farming communities.

“This is a natural next step for us,” said Boomitra’s founder and CEO, Aadith Moorthy. “With over a decade of experience running soil carbon projects across more than ten countries, we are now expanding our operational and monitoring capabilities into this new, high-integrity carbon removal pathway.”

十年封存 20 萬噸碳，目標百萬公頃規模

Oasis 項目首階段將在十年內復育一萬公頃土地，預計永久移除超過 20 萬噸二氧化碳，未來更有潛力拓展至覆蓋百萬公頃的地區規模，為南部非洲的氣候與土地管理提供長期解方。

此項目已通過碳移除標準機構 Puro.Earth 的初步評估，將依循 BiCRS 最佳實踐進行，包括以土壤氣體監測室（soil gas chambers）量測溫室氣體通量，確保碳封存效益長期有效。

Boomitra 強調其方法「低技術、低能源消耗，且可部署於偏遠地區」，特別適合在南半球、缺乏先進基礎建設的國家推廣。

In its initial phase, the Oasis project aims to rehabilitate 10,000 hectares within ten years, permanently removing over 200,000 tons of CO₂. Looking ahead, the project has the potential to scale to cover one million hectares, providing a long-term climate and land management solution for Southern Africa.

The project has passed preliminary assessments by the carbon removal standard organization Puro.Earth and will adhere to BiCRS best practices, including greenhouse gas flux monitoring via soil gas chambers to ensure the durability of carbon sequestration benefits.

在地夥伴驅動落地成效

Oasis 計畫亦展現高度在地合作。Boomitra 與博茨瓦納的畜牧公司 Brahmans Botswana 及納米比亞的永續農業顧問公司 Namibia Resource Consultants 攜手，導入灌木控制與草原管理技術，確保項目符合當地需求、取得社區信任。

「我們的灌木密度已到了不得不處理的地步，與 Boomitra 合作讓這個區域危機轉化為土地與社區的長期機會。」Brahmans Botswana 的 Sheldon Barnes 表示。

Boomitra highlights that its method is low-tech and low-energy, making it especially suitable for deployment in remote regions of the Global South where advanced infrastructure is lacking.

Local partnerships play a critical role in the project’s success. Boomitra is collaborating with Botswana-based livestock company Brahmans Botswana and Namibia’s sustainable agriculture consultancy Namibia Resource Consultants to implement shrub control and grassland management techniques that align with local needs and build community trust.

國際擴展潛力與未來佈局

“Our shrub density had reached a level that demanded action,” said Sheldon Barnes of Brahmans Botswana. “Working with Boomitra has turned this regional crisis into a long-term opportunity for both the land and local communities.”

Boomitra 在土壤碳領域已具全球布局，目前與超過 10 個國家的 10 萬多位農牧戶合作，涵蓋 500 萬英畝土地。此次延伸至 BiCRS 領域，意味其碳移除解方將涵蓋更多土地退化地區，並補足不同類型的自然氣候解方（Natural Climate Solutions）。

Already active globally in the soil carbon sector - with collaborations involving over 100,000 farmers and pastoralists across 10 countries and 5 million acres - the company’s move into BiCRS signals an expanded carbon removal footprint that addresses a broader range of land degradation issues and complements other natural climate solutions.
