隨著氣候變遷壓力升高，足球場該使用天然草坪、人造草皮還是混合系統，已不再只是美學或球員偏好的問題，而是關乎永續發展與環境衝擊的重要抉擇。

The debate over football pitches has moved far beyond aesthetics or player preference. As climate change intensifies, the question of whether to use natural grass, artificial turf, or hybrid systems is becoming one of the sport’s most pressing sustainability challenges.

天然草雖然仍是歐洲足聯（UEFA）等機構的首選，但其高耗水量與養護成本在乾旱頻發的地區正面臨挑戰。

Natural grass remains the traditional gold standard, mandated by UEFA for major competitions. Yet its water consumption and maintenance demands are increasingly unsustainable in drought-hit regions. In Catalonia, FC Barcelona was forced to cut irrigation in 2023–24 under government restrictions. To cope, the club invested €1.4 million in a water-recycling facility that produces 380 cubic metres of treated water daily - enough to sustain training grounds without tapping public supplies. This highlights how the future of natural grass will depend on technological solutions and water-saving measures.

Artificial turf has long been marketed as durable and cost-effective, but its environmental toll is substantial. A UK government study estimated that artificial pitches release nearly 16,866 tonnes of microplastic annually, mostly from rubber crumb infill. These particles contaminate soils and waterways, prompting regulatory action. The EU’s REACH regulation is phasing out high-PAH infills, while Norway is piloting cork and coconut-based alternatives to reduce plastic pollution.

Hybrid pitches, which blend natural grass with synthetic fibres, are increasingly used in elite venues such as Wembley and the Emirates. They require less water and fewer chemicals than pure grass while offering consistent performance. However, embedded fibres still contribute to microplastic pollution over time, albeit at lower levels than fully artificial surfaces.

For lower-league clubs, climate threats often manifest differently. Carlisle United’s Brunton Park has been repeatedly flooded by the River Eden, most dramatically during Storm Desmond in 2015. For such clubs, sustainability means investment in flood defences, drainage, and relocation planning rather than surface technology.

Football’s pitch dilemma reflects the broader struggle to balance tradition, performance, and environmental responsibility. Natural grass is under threat from drought policies;

As the climate crisis deepens, football will need to redefine how pitches are built, maintained, and regulated. The future playing surface may look the same to fans, but its hidden sustainability features will determine whether the game can thrive on a changing planet.
