The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the establishment of the Tribal Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Working Group, which is managed by the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). Native American peoples play a critical role in helping the United States achieve its energy security and climate goals and develop its vast energy resources, critical minerals and materials, and carbon management potential.

As part of this collaboration, the working group will provide the Department of Energy with ongoing advice and expertise to more effectively support Tribes’ carbon reduction efforts and natural resource use. DOE’s technical support will help tribes advance their local economies, provide job training for local high-wage and middle-class job opportunities, and support tribes’ efforts to enhance technical capabilities and promote energy, economic and community development opportunities.

This Tribal Working Group on Fossil Energy and Carbon Management marks the fourth working group the Department of Energy has collaborated with tribes on. This latest working group will initially include representatives from the eight federally recognized tribes that have abundant fossil energy resources and rely on revenue from these resources: the Jikalia Apache, Crow, Navajo, Caddo, Hopi, Southern Ute, Arctic North Slope Inupiat, and the Mandan, Hidasa, and Arikara (MHA) nations. DOE anticipates that the number of tribes formally participating in the task force will grow over time.

“The Mandan, Hidasa and Arikara Nation are deeply honored to host DOE and forum participants for a tour of our MHA Native Green Grow and Bakken operations,” said Chairman Mark N. Fox. As stewards of lands and resources, we recognize the importance of reducing methane emissions and are exploring new opportunities to reduce emissions. Our Nation is particularly looking forward to working with FECM "Working with other partners, including the University of Oklahoma, as well as engineers, chemists and industry leaders, to research innovative solutions such as converting methane into hydrogen is consistent with our long-term energy goals and commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions. These discussions in the FECM Tribal Working Group will not only benefit our nation, but also help the entire Indian Country and the broader Oklahoma community achieve a cleaner, more resilient future."

"The Arctic Slope Inupiat community is very much looking forward to working with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management and participating in the Tribal Working Group," said Doreen Leavitt, director of the Arctic Slope Inupiat Division of Natural Resources. "As stewards of the vast oil and gas resources on Alaska's North Slope, we are committed to managing these resources in a manner that respects the land and people while ensuring the well-being of future generations. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act provides more than $13 billion in funding to directly support tribal communities and makes tribes eligible to apply for or request billions of dollars in additional funding. The Inflation Reduction Act provides tribes with $720 million in climate resilience and energy funding and provides hundreds of billions in tax credits for which clean energy and industrial projects on tribal lands and communities are eligible.
