Saudi Arabia’s energy and water giant, ACWA Power, has announced a strategic investment of up to USD 10 billion in Malaysia, encompassing clean energy and water infrastructure projects. This marks one of the largest green infrastructure collaborations in Southeast Asia in recent years. The major announcement was made during the ASEAN-GCC Summit, highlighting the growing cooperation between the two regions on sustainability and development issues.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ACWA Power and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) focuses on developing up to 12.5 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, with a goal of completing deployment by 2040. The project will directly support Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to achieve a 70% renewable energy share in the national electricity mix by 2050, addressing climate challenges while ensuring energy security.

This initiative also represents a key step in the international expansion strategy of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The Kingdom has been actively working to reduce its reliance on oil and diversify its economy by expanding into global green energy and water sectors through state-owned enterprises like ACWA Power.

Currently, ACWA Power operates in 14 countries across various sectors including electricity, green hydrogen, and desalination. Malaysia is now emerging as another strategic hub for the company in Southeast Asia, following its operations in Vietnam and Indonesia.
