JC Wayne《Atomic Universe》以永續材料呈現微觀生命與精神意涵

美國藝術家 JC Wayne 以細緻黑白線條著稱的新作《Atomic Universe》系列，於 12 月初在 All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church 展出，展期至 1 月底。九件作品從微觀生命的演化階段發想，以自然、科學與精神性串連視覺敘事，邀請觀者在凝視中產生內在思辨。

American artist JC Wayne has installed her latest nine-piece series, Atomic Universe, at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church. Known for her fine-line black-and-white paintings, Wayne invites viewers to step close and reflect on the micro-scale development of life. The exhibition opened in early December and will remain on view until the end of January.

作品從編號 0 的 Seed 開始，接續 Egg、Kernel、Light、Pollen、Pod、Valence、Root 與 Bloom，象徵生命從潛能到綻放的歷程。Wayne 表示，這系列源自她在 2022 年冬至創意節的每日靈感輸入，部分作品曾於芝加哥展出。

The series is numbered from zero, beginning with Seed and followed by Egg, Kernel, Light, Pollen, Pod, Valence, Root, and Bloom. Each work represents a stage of growth and potential, integrating themes of nature, science, and spiritual inquiry. Wayne developed the initial concepts during a winter solstice creative festival in 2022, producing one image per day based on emerging inspiration. Some pieces in the series were previously exhibited in Chicago.

在材料選擇上，Wayne 同樣注重永續性。她以印度女性以回收紗麗製成的黑色手工紙為創作基底，搭配白色石膏底漆和手工調製的雲母水粉顏料，材料皆來自地球或植物來源。因底漆厚薄不同，有些作品呈現紙張自然透出的質感，有些則出現自然裂痕，成為畫面的一部分。

Material selection plays a critical role in Wayne’s artistic practice. She paints on handmade black paper produced by women in India who repurpose discarded saris into paper pulp. The surface is coated with white gesso, applied in varying thicknesses to create translucence or natural cracking. Wayne’s intricate linework uses hand-mixed mica gouache made from plant- or earth-based pigments, which shimmer under direct lighting.

Many works include two intersecting lines, which Wayne interprets as symbolic axes. The vertical line represents spiritual being, while the horizontal line represents daily life and human interaction. This intersection becomes the central point from

which each composition expands. Mid-series works, such as Valence, blend scientific and spiritual imagery. The design resembles a sprouting seed reaching upward, suggesting a movement toward insight or devotion after grounding itself in lived experience.

收尾作品 Bloom 與前八作不同，採用透明紙將所有前作圖像層層疊加，以數位方式呈現生命階段的總和效果。Wayne 表示，希望觀者在這件作品裡看到人類、地球及所有生命共同體的完整性。

The final piece, Bloom, differs from the previous eight works. Instead of a hand-painted composition, it digitally layers all earlier artworks on a sheet of transparency, creating a cumulative, diaphanous effect. Wayne hopes viewers perceive in this piece the fullness of humanity, the planet, and all living communities.

每幅作品都搭配 Wayne 所寫的短歌詩。短歌以固定音節結構呈現，迫使語意極度凝練，形成與她自由、直覺式的繪畫截然不同的表達方式。

Each artwork is accompanied by an original tanka poem written by Wayne. The traditional five-line poetic form, defined by strict syllabic structure, requires concise and essential expression. Wayne sees the poems as a counterbalance to her intuitive and spontaneous painting style.

Wayne is part of a cohort of artists who came together after an exhibition by Christine Hales and have continued to bring their work to the All Angels community. All pieces in Atomic Universe are available for purchase as originals or museum-quality prints.
