In today’s rapidly developing urban environments, many children grow up surrounded by concrete rather than nature. For them, the natural world often becomes something to be protected from a distance, not something to be embraced. But on Earth Day, at the USJ14 Community Garden in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, a group of kindergarteners experienced sustainability not as a slogan, but as a tangible, hands-on lifestyle. Through nature walks, leaf printing, and crafting with recycled materials, they began to understand that green living is something they can practice from a young age.

Organized by Little Caliphs USJ15 Kindergarten in collaboration with the community garden, this event carried deeper significance: when environmental issues move beyond textbooks and classrooms into real life and local spaces, learning becomes grounded, real, and impactful.

不只是遊戲，是氣候素養的啟蒙

園長 Amal Mohammed Nasser 提到，孩子們過去曾到花園做科學專題，但這是首次在此慶祝地球日。這樣的轉變顯示教育者對戶外學習空間的再認識——不再只是觀察植物的地方，而是生活與永續價值觀實踐的「共學基地」。

活動當天的自然步行與葉片拓印，讓孩子透過觸摸與觀察認識植物的多樣性；而使用回收物品製作樂器的環節，更是將「3R」（減量、重複使用、回收）的理念，轉化為孩子可參與的創意行動。這樣的學習，是身體力行的，也是情感連結的。

Beyond Play: A First Step Toward Climate Literacy

Headmaster Amal Mohammed Nasser noted that the children had previously visited the garden for science projects, but this marked the first time they celebrated Earth Day there. This shift reflects a growing recognition among educators of the value of outdoor learning - not just as a space to observe plants, but as a living, breathing “co-learning hub” where values like sustainability can take root.

Nur Jannah Nur Iskandar 補充說，活動的目的也包含了社區的參與與家庭的介入，「我們希望孩子與父母能從家中做起，一起實踐永續行動。」這讓我們看到，永續教育的實踐，不能只依賴學校，而是需要整個社區共同建立文化與行動的場域。

社區花園，不只是綠地，更是綠色治理的縮影

這座在 2018 年設立的 USJ14 社區花園，由社區花園協會（Community Garden Association）管理與營運，自 2019 年起就與周邊學校建立合作關係。協會秘書 Muhamad Adam Abdullah 表示，多數社區花園僅著重在種植作物，但他們希望讓這塊空間成為真正屬於社區的共創場域。

During the event, the children engaged in sensory-rich activities like nature walks and leaf printing to explore plant diversity. They also made instruments from recycled materials, turning the “3Rs” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) into creative actions. This kind of learning is both embodied and emotional - an early form of environmental consciousness shaped by touch, play, and community.

Nur Jannah Nur Iskandar, the kindergarten operator, added that the goal was also to involve families and the broader community. “We want children and parents to start practicing sustainability at home,” she said. It’s a powerful reminder that sustainability education doesn’t stop at the school gate - it requires a supportive, engaged community to cultivate long-term change.

這座花園內部設有雨水回收系統、枯葉堆肥裝置，甚至以竹子搭建結構建物，不僅體現低碳建築的精神，也創造出教育展示的可能。「我們希望這裡不只是綠地，而是行動中的環境教育實驗室，」Muhamad 強調。

當 Subang Jaya 市政局議員謝偉康（Ken Chia）在活動中與孩子們一起參與、進行登革熱與健康簡報時，也揭示了另一個重點：城市治理若想真正落實永續目標，就必須從幼年教育與社區協力開始。

A Community Garden as a Microcosm of Green Governance

Established in 2018, the USJ14 Community Garden is managed by the Community Garden Association and has collaborated with local schools since 2019. According to the association’s secretary, Muhamad Adam Abdullah, most community gardens focus solely on planting - but his team wanted something more: a co-created space that truly belongs to the community.

Their garden features a rainwater harvesting system, composting from dried leaves, and bamboo-built structures - an embodiment of low-carbon design and ecological innovation. “We don’t want it to be just a green patch,” Muhamad said, “but a living environmental education lab.”

Subang Jaya City Councillor Ken Chia, who attended the event and delivered health and anti-dengue briefings to the children, highlighted another key point: for urban sustainability goals to be truly realized, education must start early - and it must be reinforced through community collaboration.
