Four of the world's leading energy companies, BP, Equinor, Shell and Total Energies, announced that they will launch an ambitious joint investment plan to advance global energy accessibility and promote the spread of clean energy solutions. The plan will focus resources on a series of "high-potential, high-impact" projects, specifically covering areas such as solar systems, clean cooking solutions, mini-grids and urban grids, electric mobility (e-mobility), and energy storage and management solutions.

As global energy demand continues to grow, energy accessibility has become a major challenge for global development. According to the 2024 progress report of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA), people around the world do not have access to a stable power supply every year. In 2022, there will be 10 million more people without access to electricity than in 2021, and only 74% of the world's population has clean cooking options. These problems pose major challenges to the economic development, improvement of people's livelihood and environmental protection in many developing countries.

The four energy companies said that through this joint investment, they aim to close the global energy access gap and drive a broader clean energy transition, especially in emerging markets and less developed regions. These markets are often plagued by multiple challenges such as high energy costs, poor infrastructure and inappropriate energy use. This investment plan will provide local communities with stable, safe and sustainable energy solutions, thereby improving the quality of life of local residents and promoting sustainable growth of the regional economy.

The potential of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a transitional fuel

Among these investments, TotalEnergies announced it will invest an additional $400 million to build liquefied petroleum gas facilities in Africa and India to further advance clean cooking solutions. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as propane, is widely regarded as a clean-burning fuel. Compared to traditional biomass fuels or other fossil fuels, the combustion process of LPG produces no visible emissions and emissions are significantly lower than other more polluting options such as wood, coal, etc. Therefore, LPG becomes a transitional fuel to address the global demand for clean cooking, providing billions of people with a greener fuel choice.

According to a 2017 report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Alliance, LPG is considered a critical fuel for the transition to clean energy because it can effectively reduce pollution and improve local air quality, thus reducing health problems caused by traditional cooking methods. The IREA report states that in 2022, more than 2.1 billion people around the world will still rely on highly polluting cooking methods, and this new investment will help promote LPG to more areas that do not yet have access to clean cooking options.
