Company & Industry Context

ENGLISH

Traditionally, the return on investment for robotic systems has been driven by reduced labour costs. However, a combination of factors - including tariffs on aluminium, pulp mill closures and tighter raw-material supply - has pushed up the market value of recyclable waste, fundamentally altering the economics of materials recovery.

AI Sorting Reshapes Recycling Efficiency

Republic Services, the second-largest waste management company in the United States, has deployed AI-powered robotic sorters at roughly one-third of its 79 facilities. Trained on thousands of material types, colours and conditions, these systems make thousands of decisions per minute, assessing quality and integrity before directing items into the correct recycling streams using mechanical arms or bursts of air.

One example is AMP’s Delta sorting system, which can extract up to 80 individual items per minute from mixed waste streams. The technology is capable of recognising billions of variations in shape, size, texture, colour, logos and even SKU numbers - a level of precision that was previously unattainable with manual sorting.

ENGLISH

According to AMP founder and chief technology officer Matanya Horowitz, recyclables have always held intrinsic value, but the cost of separating them from waste often matched or exceeded that value. AI-driven automation is now shifting this structural constraint.

Business Models and Recovery Rates Improve

AMP recently signed a 20-year agreement to operate a materials recovery facility for Virginia’s Southeastern Public Service Authority, a region that previously recorded a recycling rate of just 7%. Under the contract, AMP receives a fee of $50 per ton of waste processed and commits to diverting at least 50% of incoming material away from landfills, with financial penalties for non-compliance - a threshold the company has so far consistently exceeded.

Evidence / Results / Impact

ENGLISH

At Republic Services, the introduction of high-speed, air-based sorting equipment has been described as a turning point. The technology significantly increases throughput, leaving only a small number of workers to monitor conveyor systems for hazardous or oversized items. Company executives note that the investment case is now driven less by labour savings and more by higher recovery rates, improved material purity and increased resale value.

ENGLISH

The Wall Street Journal reports that Waste Management, the largest waste management company in the country, has invested approximately $1.4 billion in robotic sorting systems. The company recorded an 18% increase in third-quarter profits, attributed largely to higher volumes and improved quality of recycled material sales.

ENGLISH

While AI-driven automation is often associated with job displacement, the recycling sector has long struggled with labour shortages. In physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments, automation is increasingly viewed as a practical solution that enhances efficiency and workplace safety.
