In recent years, the development of the global electric vehicle market has attracted much attention. Although there have been fluctuations in the short term, ups and downs in demand, and some manufacturers have faced challenges in capacity allocation, in the long term, the trend of electric vehicle popularity remains clear and steady.

According to U.S. federal data, there are currently more than 283 million registered vehicles of all types in the United States, including cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles. Among them, the average age of light vehicles (such as passenger cars and light trucks) is more than 12 years, and the average owner has owned the same vehicle for about 8 years. Buying or leasing a car is a major financial decision for most consumers, occurring far less frequently than other technology products (such as smartphones or LED light bulbs). This is also one of the main reasons why the popularity of electric vehicles is relatively slow.

According to the latest data, in the third quarter of this year, electric vehicles accounted for 8.9% of total new car sales, an increase of 1 percentage point from the same period last year. Compared with five years ago when the market share of electric vehicles was less than 2%, this growth rate has shown a stable development trend. However, even if all new car sales were converted to electric vehicles, it would still take at least decades to achieve full electrification, given the inventory of hundreds of millions of vehicles and the natural replacement cycle.

Infrastructure construction and policy support go hand in hand

With the development of the electric vehicle industry, the expansion of related infrastructure such as charging stations will also be promoted simultaneously. Historical experience shows that the construction of the US interstate highway system took decades, and the rural electrification process also went through multiple stages. The popularization of electric vehicles and infrastructure construction go hand in hand and will be a long-term and comprehensive project.

Experts pointed out that the matching of market demand and production scale, the popularity of charging facilities, the improvement of consumer awareness, and the stability and support of policies are all important factors in promoting the development of the electric vehicle industry. Relevant policies of federal, state and local governments will play a key role in market trends and development opportunities.

Multiple benefits driving the electric transformation

The main reason for promoting the popularity of electric vehicles is their significant environmental and economic benefits. The carbon emissions of electric vehicles are much lower than traditional fuel vehicles, and maintenance costs are lower. There is no need to change engine oil, and the mechanical failure rate is relatively low. In addition, electric vehicle batteries can serve as a temporary source of power in emergencies. While electric vehicles are not perfect, they have clear advantages, as do hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

In addition to electric vehicles, the future transportation field will also require diversified solutions, including increasing walking space, planning dedicated bicycle lanes, and improving the public transportation system to achieve a more comprehensive and sustainable transportation network.

Long-term strategic layout to steadily promote industrial transformation

Experts point out that due to the huge stock of existing vehicles and the relatively low frequency of vehicle replacement by car owners, the process of popularizing electric vehicles requires patience and strategic planning. In the next few decades, the United States needs to effectively use this transition period to comprehensively improve power infrastructure construction, expand the scale of electric vehicle production, develop more affordable models, standardize charging facilities, optimize the electricity price mechanism, and promote consumer education and related talent training for electric vehicle technology. In addition, the recycling and processing of electric vehicle batteries and the establishment of long-term financing mechanisms will become important issues for future development.

ENGLISH

Under the global electrification trend, countries are accelerating the popularization of electric vehicles and are committed to reducing carbon emissions and coping with climate change. However, the development of the electric vehicle industry not only faces challenges in policy, infrastructure, technology and consumer acceptance, but is also affected by the international economic environment and geopolitics. Taking the United States as an example, policy instability may cause fluctuations in the growth pace of electric vehicles. This situation also deserves Taiwan's attention.

Consultant Zhang Huiyi of Scienjoy Sustainability Consulting Services said that for Taiwan, although the development of the electric vehicle industry has certain technological advantages, it also faces unique challenges, such as insufficient popularization of charging facilities, supply chain dependence on the international market, and consumer concerns about electric vehicle repair and maintenance. At the same time, how to strike a balance between policy support and industrial independence is also a problem that Taiwan needs to solve in the future. Against this background, Taiwan should make good use of its strengths in semiconductors, battery technology and other fields to strengthen the local electric vehicle supply chain and actively promote infrastructure construction and consumer education. In addition, the government needs to continue to improve policy support and integrate with international market trends to ensure that Taiwan has a place in the global electrification wave. Only with the coordination of policies, industries, and markets can Taiwan's electric vehicle industry overcome challenges, seize the opportunities brought by the green economy, and contribute to sustainable global development.
