Distributed energy resource management leader EnergyHub has announced a partnership with GM Energy, the energy division of General Motors, to drive large-scale integration of electric vehicles (EVs) and home energy storage systems. The collaboration aims to make these distributed assets active participants in utility programs and energy markets across the United States.
Company & Industry Context
According to both companies, the partnership will focus on enabling EVs and residential energy storage systems to support grid operations through smart charging and home energy management capabilities - transforming them from passive loads into proactive energy assets. This is seen as critical to the future transformation and resilience of the power system.
“This partnership with General Motors is an important step in expanding our impact on utility customers,” said Jeff Huron, Senior Manager of EV Strategy and Business Development at EnergyHub. “Through this integration, we can not only enhance the experience for EV drivers but also help grid operators manage the growing challenges posed by the rapid expansion of EVs and distributed energy resources.”
Challenge / Why It Matters
The Intersection of EV Adoption and Grid Management
With EV sales continuing to rise, the electric grid is facing increased pressure from this emerging load source. According to data released by GM on April 1, the company saw a 17% year-over-year increase in total U.S. vehicle sales in Q1 2025, with EV sales growing by a remarkable 94%. Although the pace of EV adoption has slowed somewhat in recent years, overall growth remains strong, particularly in the SUV and pickup segments.
This surge in EV usage is prompting utilities to rethink their strategies for peak demand management and infrastructure upgrades. EnergyHub says its EV smart charging platform offers dynamic load control and demand response capabilities, helping utilities reduce demand during peak periods and avoid overloading distribution networks due to mass EV charging.
“Our platform helps turn EVs into grid assets, rather than liabilities,” Huron explained. “From the transmission level down to the neighborhood distribution grid, we enable real-time responsive electricity use.”
Smart Charging Programs to Launch with GM EV Owners
The partnership’s first programs are expected to roll out in select regions in the second half of 2025. Owners of Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac EVs will be able to enroll in EnergyHub’s smart charging and distributed energy management initiatives through participating utility providers.
These programs will feature “smart or managed charging” functionality, which automatically adjusts charging times and speeds based on grid conditions, electricity prices, and driver preferences - avoiding peak loads while maintaining driver convenience and mobility.
“Our goal is to create a win-win-win scenario: EV owners get a smarter, more cost-effective charging experience; utilities gain predictable load management tools; and society benefits from a more stable, low-carbon grid,” Huron emphasized.
California Pilot Explores V2X Future
This is not GM Energy’s first foray into grid-integrated applications. In March, the company announced its participation in Pacific Gas and Electric’s (PG&E) Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) pilot project in California. The initiative is testing the use of EVs as backup power sources for homes and communities, as well as their role in enhancing energy resilience during extreme weather events.
Using bidirectional charging and home energy control systems, future EVs could power household lighting and HVAC systems during outages or send electricity back to the grid during peak demand - essentially serving as decentralized backup power plants.
