According to McLaren’s Director of Sustainability, Kim Wilson, McLaren began researching circular racing as early as 2022 and established a dedicated sustainability team. She emphasized that this handbook marks a significant milestone in the project’s evolution, enabling teams to assess the "circularity" of their operations and optimize internal processes within the current regulatory and market constraints. She also noted that the tool can not only drive individual improvements but also help identify common challenges across the F1 industry - challenges that teams and the FIA can collectively address through standardized solutions. The goal is to establish shared best practices that do not compromise competitive fairness, allowing a balance between sustainability and innovation.

ENGLISH

From the FIA’s perspective, Nikolas Tombazis, FIA’s Single-Seater Director, stated that the handbook will help gather data on how teams apply eco-friendly materials and circular design principles. Based on the results, the FIA may consider amending technical regulations to further encourage the adoption of sustainable materials and processes. Tombazis emphasized that the FIA’s objective is not to force teams to sacrifice performance or face cost disadvantages, but to create an environment of "collective action" where all participants can work toward common sustainability goals without compromising competitiveness.

He added that the handbook conveys more than just technical guidelines - it sends a powerful signal from the racetrack to society. For F1, reducing environmental impact and carbon emissions is a responsibility, and circularity is a key piece of that puzzle.

Circular Materials in Practice: Testing and Deploying Recycled Carbon Fibre

One of the most prominent examples of circular materials in F1 today is the use of recycled carbon fibre. This material significantly reduces the energy required to produce virgin carbon fibre and can be recovered through techniques such as pyrolysis, which separates the fibre from its resin matrix. While this process may slightly reduce the tensile strength of the material, several companies are investing in R&D to minimize the performance gap.

McLaren, for example, partnered with materials tech company V-Carbon in 2023 to test the feasibility of recycled carbon fibre during the U.S. and British Grand Prix. The technology has since been officially deployed in the construction of the third-generation Formula E (Gen3) cars.
