Company & Industry Context
Sustainable concepts lead innovative design
Designed by Akshat Bhatt, principal architect at Architecture Discipline, the residence was designed for an entrepreneur pursuing a sustainable lifestyle. The building frame is made of glulam, a high-strength and environmentally friendly building material, and consists of 11 precision-prefabricated glulam frames that were produced in New Delhi and shipped to Goa for on-site assembly. The use of glulam not only reduces carbon emissions, but also demonstrates how the construction industry can minimize its impact on the environment through technological innovation.
Challenge / Why It Matters
Butt said the design of the house was a bold challenge to traditional building materials, and he chose to realize the design with materials with a low carbon footprint, demonstrating the huge potential of glulam in modern construction. He added: "In today's built environment, choosing sustainable materials and technologies is not just a design idea, it is our responsibility."
Harmonious symbiosis between structural design and nature
Located on Goa’s beautiful tropical coastline, the residence is elevated to reduce impact on the terrain. The building structure is supported by pile foundations and concrete retaining walls, high enough to avoid the effects of moisture and capillary action, and to protect the local ecology. This design not only improves the stability of the building, but also embodies the concept of harmonious coexistence with nature.
Action / Solution / Implementation
The 8,650-square-foot home is clad in charred wood panels treated with the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique. This material is extremely durable and can effectively withstand the high humidity and heat conditions found in tropical climates, making it an ideal choice for construction materials in the Goa region.
In addition, the residence is equipped with an outdoor swimming pool and additional leisure space, which not only enhances the quality of life, but also provides residents with a comfortable and luxurious living environment.
Interior design: a combination of natural beauty and modern style
The interior design of the house adopts an open layout, with high-quality granite floors and exposed glulam frames, creating a natural and warm atmosphere. The space design focuses on the combination of function and aesthetics, including a spacious living room, dining room and kitchen. These areas are arranged in the form of a cantilevered structure. The swimming pool and garden are located on both sides of the building, forming a spatial experience that combines movement and stillness. Additionally, the residence features a private carpentry workshop to accommodate the homeowner’s individual creative needs, further emphasizing the space’s versatility.
Evidence / Results / Impact
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows on three sides allow natural light to fill the interior, increasing the brightness and transparency of the space. The building also has a semi-open metal terrace, suspended above the landscape, where residents can enjoy the magnificent sea views and natural scenery, and feel an intimate connection with nature. The interior furniture design is simple and fashionable, and some are made of leather, showing a low-key and luxurious modern style.
The perfect combination of art and practicality
The upper level of the home is connected by a metal staircase and features a gallery-like gallery for displaying the owner’s art collection and other treasures. This gallery is not only a practical extension of the space, but also injects a strong artistic flavor into the overall design. The long corridor connects the living room and master bedroom on the upper floor, providing a private and comfortable living space and giving the house a unique cultural atmosphere.
