In recent years, opposition to ESG initiatives has intensified worldwide. In the United States, conservative critics have strongly challenged the role of ESG in corporate governance, arguing that discussions on climate change, diversity, and social responsibility may distract companies from their core business objectives. This criticism escalated during Donald Trump’s presidency, with his administration making the rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies a priority.

Despite these pressures, Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund has made it clear that its commitment to ESG will remain unchanged. At a press conference on February 6, Carine Smith Ihenacho, the fund’s Chief Governance and Compliance Officer, stated:

“We are facing a wave of opposition to ESG, impacting markets, companies, and investors. However, for us, ESG has always been about financial materiality and long-term value creation.”

She emphasized that the fund would continue to engage in active dialogue with companies worldwide on ESG issues, noting that such discussions are even more critical in today’s uncertain global market.

Deepening Collaboration with Leading Tech Companies

As one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally, Norway’s fund holds investments in nearly 9,000 companies, with nine out of its ten largest equity holdings being technology firms, including Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia. As of late 2024, technology stocks accounted for 19% of the fund’s total portfolio.

Additionally, the fund has placed a strong focus on children’s safety and online environments, making it a core issue in discussions with leading tech firms.
